Newspaper Article about Tom Robinson
Before the trial, a mob tried to capture Tom Robinson. My father was going to stop them, but Scout ended up stopping them instead. I was relieved but also angered by Scout’s stupidity. How can she just run out there like everything was normal? It was dangerous for her to do that. She might have gotten hurt.
I can remember Tom’s case like it was just yesterday. Scout, Dill, and I sneaked in the black section without our father’s knowledge. We knew he wouldn’t let us come if he knew. Tom Robinson was framed for raping Bob Ewell’s daughter, Mayella Ewell. The Ewell family lived in poverty, and they were considered to be lower than the blacks. They lived off of government relief checks.
Mayella testified that she went to get a nickel for Tom for chopping some wood. Then, Tom came and attacked her from behind. He was framed for beating her senselessly, chocking, and raping her, but there was no solid evidence that supported her testimony. She had a bruise on her right eye, but this meant that the person who beat her was most likely a left handed person. Bob Ewell was testified as a left handed person. Tom Robinson’s left arm was useless because of an accident when he was little. It was a pretty clear observation that Tom did not touch Mayella Ewell and that her dad did.
Tom testified that he was getting down a box on a chiffarobe for Mayella when suddenly she hugged him. She also kissed him on the side of the face. Tom wanted to run out, but she wouldn’t let her. He didn’t want to push Mayella because that would be rude. Before he could do anything, Bob Ewell was yelling and threatening Mayella. That’s when he ran out of the house. Mayella might have been forced to lie about this case, or Mayella could have been guilty of committing the worst crime of all by kissing a black man. To get rid of the guilt, she had to get rid of Tom Robinson.
It was obvious that Bob Ewell abused Mayella and framed Tom, but he was found guilty anyways with no absolute evidence. Despite of what everyone thought, they made him guilty because of his race. It was still progress to social equality because it took longer to choose his verdict than for other black people.
Tom Robinson was killed in a prison while trying to escape. We were told that he tried to escape the prison but was shot down with 17 bullets. Were 17 bullets necessary to kill him? No it was just out of pure hatred towards the blacks.
